about

This is about this dog that was always tied up in the frontyard across the street from the recording studio where I recorded my first album. This was in Baton Rouge and it would flood on this street and the dog would stand on his dog house to get away from the water. I was friends with him and would pet him and I almost stole him. I kind of regret not stealing him. “He’s just trying to survive” which is a lyric about him and me.

lyrics

Out in the front yard dog is tied to post, he stands and barks at the road
His name is Jones, black and white and brown, he stands and barks at the road
He'd share his home if Justin came around, they'd stand and howl at the road
1,200 miles and still he hasn't found, no longer bark at the road

Sun gonna rise no matter what, no matter what you do or what you say
You can feel real low down, sun gonna come up either way

Out by and old shed, Jones can be found, he stands and stares at the yard
The noise he makes it is his one true friend, he stands alone in the yard
The city's hot on this side of town, he's tired of watching the cars
The dreams he hides can keep his heart alive, he's just trying to survive

Sun gonna rise no matter what, no matter what you do or what you say
You can feel real low down, sun gonna come up either way

He's just trying to survive.
